July 2008 Speaker Series
July 2
Speakers: Terry Allen & Barney Whittier, Lakeshore Rotary Club
Topic: Rotarians Bringing Safe Water to Latin America
For much of the world, clean, safe drinking like we have in Michigan is a distant dream. Southwest Michigan Rotarians are part of an effort to make that dream come true for children in the Dominican Republic. Using the simple, robust technology of bio-sand filtration, they have helped improve the lives of thousands of Dominican children. Our speakers, past presidents of the Lakeshore Club, will share the challenges and satisfactions of this remarkable Rotary outreach project. Host/introducer: Elaine Alexander.
July 9
Speaker: Jesse Bernstein, President/CEO, Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce
Topic: Ann Arbor’s Economy – Past & Present Realities, Future Hopes
Beginning his third year as Chamber President/CEO, club member Jesse Bernstein will discuss Ann Arbor’s past economic realities, current challenges (can you spell Pfizer, Rotarians?) and hopeful signs for the future. Jesse’s perspective is informed by involvement with 1,400 Chamber members, chairing the Mayor’s Downtown Marketing Task Force, and board membership with United Way and the Workforce Development Board. He disclaims special knowledge of Pfizer issues, but will take questions on just about anything else. Host/introducer: Charlie Crone.
July 16
NO MEETING . . . ENJOY THE ART FAIRS!
July 23
Speaker: David Keren – Pathologist, Rotarian & Steep Terrain Trekker
Topic: Lessons Learned from Ascending Mount Kilimanjaro
Earlier this year club member Dave Keren had his adventure of a lifetime: climbing to the 19,340-foot peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. He will describe his six-month preparations for and the physical and mental challenges of the climb, controversies about snow at the peak, current status and likely future fate of Kilimanjaro glaciers, altitude sickness and economic factors that make it almost unavoidable for most climbers, his summit-day hallucinations, and a memorable “night of a thousand zippers.” Host/introducer: To be announced.
July 30
Speaker: Oran Hesterman, President/CEO, Fair Food Foundation
Topic: The Local Food Movement in Distressed Urban Communities
A national leader in sustainable agriculture and the “local food” movement, our speaker is the President/CEO of the Fair Food Foundation, an organization working with historically-excluded communities to design systems upholding the fundamental right to healthy, fresh, sustainably-grown food. Dr. Hesterman will describe the Foundation’s efforts – including partnerships with individual citizens, political leaders and community-based organizations – to create and sustain an effective local food system in Detroit and elsewhere. Host/introducer: Chuck Cares
