June 2008 Speaker Series

June 4

Speaker: Walton Hancock, U-M Emeritus Professor of Engineering
Topic: Hospital Cost & Quality Improvements Using Contemporary Systems

There are 6747 hospitals in the U.S. with an average per diem rate of $1,756. They have systems to admit patients, schedule operating rooms, assign nursing staff, perform ancillary tests and schedule outpatients. If they would use contemporary methods, they could reduce their budgets by over 30% and improve quality! Brother Rotarian Walt Hancock will present specifics of these methods and how they can - and need to be - applied to bring about significant improvements in American health care. Host/introducer: Brooks Sitterley.

June 11

Speaker: Carla Milarch, Executive Director, Performance Network
Topic: Be Inspired - the 2008-09 Season at Performance Network Theater

Carla Milarch is the Executive Director of the Performance Network Theater, Ann Arbor 's only resident professional theater company. PNT, which is approaching its 26th season, has been described as " Ann Arbor's little slice of Broadway" and has been the scene of some of our club's most successful and enjoyable social outings over the past few years. Come hear what it takes to operate such an enterprise in little old Ann Arbor and what the buzz is all about for '08-09 as Carla previews the upcoming season! Host/introducer: Barbara Bach.

June 18

Speaker: Rich Rodriguez, University of Michigan Head Football Coach
Topic: A New Season and a New Era for Wolverine Football

Questions abound when it comes to U-M Football, as a new season approaches with a new coaching staff, a work-in-progress stadium renovation, and lots of new players at key positions. This is the day when you can hear in-person answers to the questions most on their minds, as new Head Coach Rich Rodriguez makes his debut appearance before our club. Don your blue and gold and put on your game faces, Rotarians, and come prepared to “listen up” and get the message. Host/introducer: Mike Marich.

June 25

Speakers: Al Burdi, Jim Cook . . . and Others?
Topic: Presidents' Day at Ann Arbor Rotary

Get ready for the changing of the guard and the passing of the torch, Ann Arbor Rotarians. President Al will bring his presidential year to a close and President-Elect (for now) Jim will discuss his plans for the Club in '08-09. Mostly, this will be a celebration of a great year for the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor, one in which the membership, the committees, the Board (what the heck, let's just say "all concerned") fulfilled Al's prediction and promise that "We Can Do It." Host/introducers: Each Other
