SEPTEMBER 2007 Speaker Series
September 5
Speaker: Todd Roberts, Superintendent, AAPS
Topic: Challenges & Opportunities Facing Ann Arbor Public Schools
After a year at the helm of the Ann Arbor Public Schools, fellow Rotarian Todd Roberts will give us a no-longer-“new” Superintendent’s “State of the Schools” report, highlighting the financial, curricular, personnel, and general administrative and governance issues that he has dealt with so far and expects to face in the year(s) to come. Can you correctly identify the mascot and school colors for Skyline High? We trust Todd can. But come prepared with other questions for him about this extremely important local public institution. Host/Introducer: Scott Westerman.
MONDAY, September 10, at Travis Pointe Country Club
Speakers: President Al Burdi and Auctioneer Russ Collins
The 2007 Rotary Invitational Golf Outing Banquet
We will not have our usual Wednesday meeting this week, because the banquet/auction grand finale to the Rotary Invitational Golf Outing will be the official meeting for the week. Remember, Rotarians, this event furnishes a major portion of funding for three of our major community service projects: high school scholarships (including Strive), tree planting, and Success by Six. This year’s auction will feature a great array of attractive items, so even if you don’t play golf or tennis, come for attendance credit and a delicious dinner, come early to socialize and bid in the silent auction, and also be in a bidding mood for the live auction.
September 19
Speaker: Walter Kraft, Exec. Vice President, Caponigro Public Relations
Topic: Understanding & Working With the News Media
For many people, working with the news media is a mysterious, sometimes frightening proposition. Our speaker, a former news director at WXYZ-TV in Detroit , will provide an overview of effective strategies to make your next media interaction a success, including “do’s and don’ts” for successful relations with the media and opportunity to observe some good and not-so-good media encounters. Even if you’re not planning to have such an encounter yourself, this talk will provide valuable insight and perspective for understanding “the news” and observing other people’s adventures and misadventures in the public eye. Host/introducer: Joanne Pierson.
September 26
Speaker: Ronald M. Davis, M.D., President, American Medical Association
Topic: Rising Costs & Decreasing Access – Challenging Directions for U.S. Health Care
Our speaker, a Michigander, occupies a unique position as AMA President to analyze, worry, plan and talk about the future of health care in the Good Old USA. With rising health care costs and decreasing access to care constituting dangerous and unacceptable cross-directional trends, the challenges to devising and implementing state and national health care policies are substantial and daunting. Dr. Davis will share his insider’s view on the AMA’s advocacy initiatives and will be eager to listen to our concerns on these vital issues. Host/Introducer: Beth Fitzsimmons.
